Basic car maintanence for students: spark plugs and ignition components

Last week we discussed the importance of changing the engine oil of a car. In the blog this week, we will discuss the importance of changing the spark plugs and various components.

We must first establish that there are differences between the older vehicles, and the old cars from 1960 to mid-1990 has a conventional distributor ignition system. On engines that still use a distributor, is a good idea to replace the distributor cap, distributor rotor and ignition son as recommended by the manufacturer. From 1996 to today, modern cars contain a direct injection system. These systems can be an ignition coil mounted on each candle or share a roll for two plugs.

Personally, being an avid car enthusiast, changed my own spark plugs and other components from the comfort of my garage at home. However, the college took away the luxury away from me and forced me to pay someone to do it. The task is simple and straightforward, at least for my Ford. However, for some, it can be quite intimidating.

Understanding the differences between the ignition is important for students who do their own car maintenance.

According AA1Car, automobile manufactures recommend changing the spark plugs every 45.000 to 50.000 miles. This can help prevent hard starting a vehicle, produce more emissions and improve fuel economy.

The components of the ignition system work hand in hand with the other. The distributor or a battery pack is what creates the electrical charge. From there, the charge moves through the son of candles down into the spark plug where it goes to an end point called the electrode. Once that spark, he created the combustion inside the cylinder, which eventually propels the vehicle.

Over time these components wear out and can cause malfunctions in the vehicle. A candle may get dirty, and electrodes may be dirty - causing the spark to not ignite. Son could be frayed spark plug or coil may be damaged. If any of these components does not work 100 percent, it could cause a vehicle to run poorly.

Symptoms of incorrect ignition system can be missed, turned against the hesitation of the engine failure to start and possibly a stop in the middle of transport.

The cost of these repairs were done varies depending on the vehicle. For students, it is relatively cheap to do yourself, but if a lack of knowledge that prevents you from the task, then take to a professional mechanic. This will help extend vehicle life, improve performance and - more important for students traveling home - lead to greater gas consumption.

6 Symptoms of Ignition Coil Failure | DoItYourself.com

If your vehicle behaves eccentrically, and you have problems with its operation, it could show signs of failing ignition coil. When you start your vehicle, the ignition coil takes power from the battery and transmits by candlelight. This ignites the fuel and makes your racing vehicle. The severity of symptoms vary according to which the ignition coils fail.

Backfire

If your car turns, it may indicate the first symptoms of a faulty ignition coil. This occurs when unused fuel is sent by the exhaust system. If you have not addressed the issue, you can also do serious damage to your exhaust will result in unnecessary and costly repairs. You can become aware that your exhaust is emitting black smoke and perhaps even detect the smell of gasoline.

Startup problems

Check your prospects with high tension (HT leads). These run between the carburetor and spark plugs. Ignition coil failures resulted in one or more candles not receive the appropriate amount of the load. If you have trouble starting your car in the cold, it's a good sign of the potential failure of the ignition coil. You can run a simple test on the HT leads to check that there is in fact a spark going from each lead to each spark plug.

Fuel Economy

If your vehicle is getting a lot less mileage for the gallon, you can also register this as a sign of ignition coil failure. When less power is reaching the spark plugs, your vehicle will struggle and use more fuel to compensate for the lack of power transfer.

Engine Misfiring

Trying to start your vehicle when the ignition coils fail will result in a rough ride. Your vehicle will cough and splutter regularly and when you drive at higher speeds, your vehicle will jerk and spit. It will also vibrate when you are running idle at a stop sign or intersection.

Vehicle Stalling

With ignition coil failure, your vehicle will have irregular sparks emitting to the plugs to keep it running. This will result in stalling. When you bring your vehicle to a stop, it may just shut off totally, thus leaving you needing to restart it.

Coil Failure

If your spark plugs are worn out, it forces the ignition coils to operate at a much higher output. Keeping your sparks plug in optimum condition can reduce your chances of having ignition coil problems. Some simple regular maintenance will save you a lot of money in the long run.

If the gap in your spark plug widens due to normal erosion, it will lead to an increased voltage being required to create a spark in the chamber. That increased voltage demands more current flow through the primary circuit and this increased current flow can overload the primary transistor. Keeping all these components in good running condition is also a big help towards keeping your coils in a good working condition.
