Doorway to death?
RALEIGH — Investigators believe Laura Ackerson died — and her body was dismembered —in the Raleigh apartment where her ex-boyfriend and his wife lived and that the couple carried out the murder with premeditation.
Raleigh police contend evidence seized from the Woodfield Glen apartment occupied by Grant and Amanda Hayes, a storage unit and Ackerson’s car yield support for that theory, according to six search warrants officially entered Tuesday in the case file charging the Hayeses with the first-degree murder of Ackerson, 27, of Kinston.
Apartment 322 at 4021 Bella Park Trail was the focal point of the investigation. Raleigh detectives have scoured the third-floor unit north of the capital city off Lynn Road and trash discarded from it by Grant and Amanda Hayes three times since July 20, warrants stated.
“Based on this evidence, including household items from (the apartment) and the totality of the investigation, it appears Laura Ackerson was likely murdered and dismembered inside the residence,” stated J.D. Faulk, the lead investigator in case for the Raleigh Police Department, on Aug. 2 in submitting the latest warrant to search the home.
Most recently, on Monday at 4:52 p.m., the department obtained financial records from a credit card issued to Amanda Smith Hayes from The Bank of Nova Scotia. Documents requested included bank statements, names of authorized users and their addresses and the businesses where debit and credit purchases were made with the card between July 1 and July 25.
“Obtaining these records will enable detectives to determine Amanda Hayes’ purchases, location of the purchases, specific items purchased that may have been used during the commission of the crime being investigated and potentially identify additional witnesses,” Detective Zeke Morse, who’s assisting Faulk in the homicide investigation, wrote in the request for the credit card report.
The Hayeses are in Wake County Jail without bond, accused of murdering Ackerson by hacking her body into pieces, packing the limbs in ice chests and transporting the containers from North Carolina to Texas, where Ackerson’s remain were disposed in a creek.
Grant Hayes — a Kinston High School alumnus who launched a career as a musician under the pseudonym “Grant Haze” — never married Ackerson, but fathered her two sons, Grant IV, 3, and Gentle Reign, 2.
