DeLand attorney killed in Ga. crash
A prominent DeLand attorney who once worked for Volusia County and the county's Sheriff's Office was killed in an eight-vehicle pileup in Georgia that resulted in two other deaths, authorities said Tuesday.
Theophilus Harris III, 78, also known as "T.I.," died after a flatbed truck struck a car in a line of vehicles that had stopped about noon Monday for crews paving a section of Highway 32 in Irwin County, Ga., authorities said.
The collision caused a chain-reaction accident, said Lt. Paul Cosper, spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol. Three people, including Harris, were killed and two others were injured, Cosper said. At least three vehicles caught fire.
"It's tragic and if people are at fault, we'll prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law," he said.
Charges are pending the ongoing investigation, Cosper said.
Harris, the father of land-use attorney Ty Harris of DeLand, was recently honored by The Florida Bar Association for 50 years of practice.
He graduated from the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law. Harris was admitted to The Bar in 1961.
Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said Harris was hired as an attorney for the Sheriff's Office in 1983, before transferring to the county attorney's office in 1989.
"He was always super nice and super easygoing," Johnson said. "All of the old-timers thought a lot of him. It's a loss to the community."
Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, is in charge of arrangements, which were not complete Tuesday.
