Art is not limited to adorning the walls of the rich and famous, but is now being made accessible to the common man by Maneka Gandhi’s People For Animals.

The organisation has roped in more than 50 painters who have allowed their artwork to be printed on porcelain mugs.

Each mug is priced at Rs 500 and is a dream for art lovers who cannot afford the original paintings of S.H. Raza, Jamini Roy or T. Vaikuntam. The mugs are being retailed in Delhi, but, for those not in Delhi, you can purchase them online at their official website.

Afreen Rahman, a young painter and art lover says, “I have always dreamt of owning a Raja Ravi Varma painting. But owning a print of his painting on a mug is a matter of pride. Now, they are available online too.”

Artist T. Vaikuntam, whose work is being printed on the mugs, is very honoured that his paintings will now be made available to a larger audience. “I do not mind contributing my works for a cause. I was approached and I gave my consent.” says the painter.

Sculptor Ravinder Reddy feels that making art accessible to everybody and not limiting it to a few is flattering for the artist. “I don’t think there is anything wrong in printing artworks on everyday items. But the reproduction should be done carefully,” says Reddy.

On the painter losing his exclusivity, Reddy feels, “I think it is exactly the opposite. It increases the visibility of the art. The Mona Lisa has been reproduced on mugs, clothing and seen everywhere, but that has only added to the popularity of the artist,” he adds.

However, art reproduction is not only limited to mugs or souvenirs, but fabric as well. Bose Krishnamachari, whose works are being showcased by the PFA, has also launched a line of handbags with his paintings on it.

Bhavna from Kalakriti Art Gallery says, “These souvenirs can never be a substitute for paintings. However, they make for very good gifts.”

There is still some exclusivity as the souvenirs are limited edition, and the numbers of them made are few.
