There is no need for video games and TV at Grandma’s house
Well, the summer is over for all the school children around here, but apparently the summer temperatures are not over. As I am starting this column on this Sunday night, I am hearing the rumbling of thunder and a little lightning, so maybe something will come of it. I hope and pray it does. And as I finish this up on this Monday morning, nothing came of the thunder and lightning. Maybe another day... I think my grandchildren enjoyed being at Grandma's this summer. They were not here every day, but some came almost every week. It has amazed me ever since I have become a grandmother and they all got big enough to play, that they love best what they find here to play with. Now I do have some toys; but I remember the first time Jake went in my attic– he thought he had come upon a gold mine and brought down one thing and another that really entertained him. This year Raegan and Maggie have played store and doctor for their entertainment. Whenever Raegan outgrows her clothes, I bring some up here so I can have some for Maggie in case I need them. They love to play store with those. There's a play cash register left over from my children's days and they get some bags, a calculator, some loose change and what not and they pretend to their heart's desire. The only catch is they usually want ME to come to their store and shop. For playing doctor, they came upon Bruce's "boot" when he broke his leg which then led to raiding bathroom drawers and closets. They then found two velcro splints that my boys probably had for their sprained ankles one time, a plastic syringe they could pretend was a shot, some old Ace bandages, a nose syringe, empty pill bottles, disposable rubber gloves, an old ice pack and a few other things, and they were in business for playing doctor. An old cell phone can be a mini X-ray machine if you imagine hard enough. You can put some Chiclets in a pill bottle for your medicine. They would doctor on each other and me, but their doll babies became patients, too. They just like it better when they have a "live" person to work on! They and I have had a grand time!
