There are many companies taking a responsible attitude toward the environment, and Epson ink cartridges are now part of the movement toward a cleaner planet. Estimates have shown that over 2 million cartridges end up in waste dump sites in the US each year. If we recycled, re-used and donated some of these for charitable causes, instead, we could not only make fewer show up at these sites, but also help someone in need. By keeping them out of our landfill areas, we ensure clean water and clean soil for future generations.

Epson cartridges are one of the most commonly recycled types on the market. Since Epson makes so many different types of ink jet printers, ink cartridges can easily be re-manufactured or refilled, and used up to five times before being thrown out, or more ideally, disposed of properly. These cassettes can also be refilled by consumers with a ‘do-it-yourself’ refill kit that is sold both by the manufacturer and other recycling companies, so that cassettes don’t even need to be mailed away to a distant factory, burning fossil fuels in the process, but refilled right in your own office or home. Each time someone refills a cassette, or has it refilled, it keeps another one from landing in a dump site, and releasing toxins into the ground water and land.

Epson ink magazines are also recycled by Epson. The company takes the initiative to help the planet by offering a pre-addressed, postage paid envelope in many of their products so that cartridges can be re-used, remanufactured, recycled and when needed, disposed of correctly. Many used cartridges are prematurely sold to rural areas over seas that welcome our ‘trash’ as a means of income. Although it is nice to be able to send off our unwanted, used goods to some other country, the world is affected everywhere by pollution, even when it isn’t in our own backyards, as evidenced by dead zones in our oceans and dying insects and plants in rainforests. It is our responsibility to act more responsibly – even with our office supplies! If you would rather not mail in your recyclables, then you can drop them off at your nearest store. Many office supply stores offer discounted merchandise, free merchandise, or credits toward future cassettes when you recycle.

An even better way to use ink cartridges responsibly, is to recycle them and raise money for a charitable cause, and that is exactly what many dozens of specialized charities do. They collect cartridges, cell phones and other secondary use and consumer waste products which can still be used again and turn them into cash. They then give that money to charities as diverse as Food banks, Children’s Cancer Recovery Centers and Drug Rehabilitation Centers. Just taking that one extra step to recycle, or re-use your ink magazine makes planet earth a better place.
