Adlers' automotive adoration runs deep

"I think we have motor oil in our blood," quipped Ron Adler of Chino, jokingly explaining why he and Brad Adler of Azusa, his older son, love fixing up and exhibiting old cars and going to car shows.

The Adlers return to the 18th annual San Dimas Sheriff's Boosters Club car show on July 31.

They will be among 300 Southern California car exhibitors attending the benefit for San Dimas sheriff's station reserve and civilian volunteers.

The registration fee is $25 per vehicle through Friday and $30 from Saturday to show day.

Automotive appreciation has been a family trait for three generations of Adler men, starting with late patriarch Harold Adler, dipping down to Ron and his big brother Jeff and stretching out to Brad and his younger brother Matt.

The Adler men bonded over cars and used this common interest as a way to spend time together. Although the Adler women pose no objections to their men's favorite pastime, they have left the repair, maintenance and exhibition of cars to the guys.

"My dad always took really good care of the family car. I watched what he did and started doing the same," Ron said. "I got the knack for taking care of cars from my dad, starting when I was about 16. Cars were easier to talk to than girls."

Ron, Brad and Matt all got their driver's licenses as soon as they were old enough to legally get behind the wheel.

Ron's first car was a red 1955 Chevrolet pickup truck.

"I like the way a red car looks," said the St. Paul, Minn., native, who was raised in Arcadia from age 5.

"I like things that stand out. It ran good and just needed some cosmetic fixing up. I had learned how to work on cars from my father, so I did the work myself."

Brad hasn't decided if he is naturally mechanically inclined or if spending so many hours watching his father work on cars facilitated his skills.

"It could be DNA," Brad said. "I never went to school for mechanic training, but I somehow can keep cars running."

Ron's next car was one he was eyeballing at a neighbor's house. He bought the 1953 Morris Minor, an English car, for $200.

Brad teased his father about "having to think back farther than I do" to recall the cars he's owned in his 64 years. Ron, his finger alternately tapping his forehead and his chin, managed to remember a late 1960s Corvair Monza, a 1979 Camaro, a red 1984 Mustang and a 1971 or 1972 Opel GT with "a manual-labor lever you had to push forward to open the headlights.

Towing with a lift kit?? - Chevy Colorado & GMC Canyon

I have a 06 crewcab. My question is im looking to put a lift kit on my truck that won't sacrfice the gvwr. I do use the truck often to tow a 24' camper. And if I'm not camping i eather have a quad I'n the back going up tO the cabin. I would like a 2 or 3 inch lift with out breaking the bank. I do mostly commuting miles. Very rare to see the truck off a paved road. So off road performance isn't mandatory. Thanks guys for your help! I guess the one thing I would mention is keep in mind that a lift is going to drastically change the angle for loading your quad into the bed. I put a motorcycle into the bed of my truck once after I lifted it, and then I decided I wasn't doing that again and I bought the trailer. I did a pretty big lift, so my loading angle probably increased more than yours would, but it was an awful lot of work to get that non-running bike up there. Just something that may be worth keeping in mind if you have to push the quad into the bed on occasion. I've got a 2" inch shackle lift and TB crank and i towed a bmw on an auto transport just fine on snowy roads. I can also load a 400lb motorcylce in the bed with one or two guys helping out. the shackles cost me $40 bucks and new off road shocks were about $200. That's a good cheap way to lift the truck and you shouldn't sacrifice much tow quality. Cranking the TB's stiffens the ride though.
