Unplug to Reconnect
As some Minnesota residents may understand, we have never left the state during the summer months. It seems summer is too short to miss anything here. After all, this is what we wait for, right?
This summer, we decided it would be different. Our family of four would hit the road for a summer vacation.
We considered taking an RV trip to South Dakota and Yellowstone National Park, but realized it would be more expensive than staying in a luxury hotel.
After some research, we decided to go to Mackinac Island in Michigan. My husband and I had both been there as kids and had fond memories. Our kids couldn't wait to pack up the car and begin our drive.
We stayed in Green Bay, Wisconsin on the way to Mackinac Island. At the hotel, the kids had their own room with a rustic bunk bed and thought they won the lottery. We embraced the water park and raced each other down the slides in our tubes. We also floated in the lazy river.
A trip to the arcade in the hotel before bed ended our day. The next morning, we toured the home of our rivals the Green Bay Packers. Lambeau Field was very impressive and we all became fans, at least for the morning.
We spent five more hours in the car driving to St. Ignace, Michigan to catch the ferry to Mackinac Island. Our car had to stay as only bikes and horses are allowed on the small island.
Once on Mackinac Island, we truly unplugged. With spotty cell phone coverage, we had no other choice. I couldn't help but wonder if this was by design.
Over the next three days, we truly enjoyed each other's company. Leisurely walks into town hand-in-hand, sitting on a bench watching the horse-drawn carriages and bikes going by, chicken fights in the pool and trips to the fudge shop filled our days.
At trip to Fort Mackinac provided our history lesson for the trip. Founded during the American Revolution, Fort Mackinac offers daily reenactments, cannon salutes, and period-costumed actors strolling the grounds.
Long dinners and good conversations filled our nights. One night after dinner, our nine-year-old son found a carcass of a seagull on the beach and he emerged from the reeds along the lake with the bird's skull on a stick. We now have this treasure at home.

Next, we added four brown Adirondack chairs around the fire pit, with four matching highback, floral chair cushions from Lowe's. We also added new seat and back cushions to the chairs overlooking the patio, and a red bistro set, all from Lowe's.
Four teams had four hours to turn an ordinary Adirondack chair into one that was infused with pop art flair. "The pop art theme was not based on the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Washington Pavilion, but it's a happy coinkydink," says organizer Jill
Resin Adirondack sets of pool deck lounge chairs | Spondicious
The first Adirondack chairs were crafted by Thomas Lee while he was at his vacation home in the Adirondack Mountains. The land around his holiday home had very few flat areas so he needed a chair that was going to be comfortable even though it may have been resting on a slope. All Adirondack chairs were originally made from 11 pieces of wood which were cut from the same board. Standout features of the Adirondack chair are the high straight backs and wide arm rests for maximum comfort.

Modern Adirondack chairs still bear most of the design characteristics of the original. However, modern influences have created chairs with a contoured back and seat for even more comfort but everything else has remained essentially the same. The design is incredibly successful and you can see it in everything from gliders to pool deck lounge chairs .
We have had resin furniture available for quite a few years now and in that time it has managed to gain a reputation as being a bit lower class. This is true in a lot of the cheaper styles of furniture but there is quite a range of good quality, stylish resin outdoor furniture available to us. It’s even environmentally friendly to a degree as a lot of it is made from recycled PET bottles.
If you don’t like maintaining wooden furniture every year then good quality resin Adirondack sets may be the way to go. Resin even gives you the option of having bright attractive colors in your furniture that won’t fade in the sun. Clever texturing during the manufacturing process can also give it the appearance and feel of wood. Given the fact that you won’t have to varnish, lacquer, stain or seal it resin furniture becomes much more appealing. It’s also much lighter in case you have to move it around regularly.

It doesn’t hurt that you are also helping the environment by putting those discarded plastic bottles to good use. You’ll get just as much comfort as a wooden set but you’ll miss out on all of the hassle.
