Japanese Psychologists: Meet Meiko - Lima City Schools Wordpress

Meet Meiko Kamiya. Meiko was a Japanese psychiatrist who treated leprosy patients at Nagashima Aiseien Sanatorium. She was known for the translation of books in philosophy. Meiko Kamiya was said to be one of the doctors of the Department of psychiatry of Tokyo University soon after the war. She also greatly helped the Ministry of Education and the General Headquarters as an English-speaking secretary, and was even said to be an advisor of Empress Michiko. Meiko Kamiya wrote many books as a highly-educated, multi-lingual person — one of her books, titled “On the Meaning of Life” (In Japanese: “Ikigai”), based on her experiences with leprosy patients, attracted many readers.

Here’s a bit on her background:

Meiko Kamiya was born on January 12, 1914 in Okayama city in the Okayama prefecture as the first daughter of Tamon Maeda. In 1920, Meiko’s father moved to Nagasaki where he became deputy mayor of metropolitan Tokyo city. A year later, her father was appointed the representative of the Japanese labor organization at Geneve, Switzerland, ad Meiko entered an international primary school. Soon after, she entered the International School of Geneva. In 1926, her family returned to Tokyo, where Meiko entered the Juyu Gakuen –later changing her school to the Seijo Higher Girls’ School. In 1932, Meiko entered the Tsuda English School.

In 1934, Meiko happened to visit Tama Zenshoen Sanatorium as an organist accompanying a missionary. It was the encounter with the leprosy patients there that deeply impressed Meiko and made Meiko want to someday work for them. At that time, leprosy was an incurable disease, and all people around Meiko were against her becoming a physican.  Around 1935,  Meiko contracted tuberculosis, and while treating the disease, she studied classical literature in Italian, German, French, and Greek independently.

In 1940, Meiko began studying medicine with the approval of her father at the premedical course of Columbia University. In 1941, she returned to Japan and entered Tokyo Women’s Medical College in fear of the coming war. In October 1942, Meiko visited Masao Oota/ Mokutaro Kinoshita (authorities on leprosy research at Tokyo University. She visited Nagashima Aiseien Sanatorium and spent 12 days there. There, she met Kansuke Mistuda and other staff, an reformed her interest in leprosy patients. In the fall of 1944, she graduated from medical school and entered the department of psychiatry of Tokyo University.
