Doctor from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh dies in car accident ...
The director of orthodontics at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh was killed over the weekend in a multiple vehicle car accident in Ohio. A tractor-trailer slammed into the back of the doctor's vehicle as she slowed for a construction area on the highway. Though the investigation of the accident is ongoing, the multiple vehicle car and truck accident may be another example of fatigued truck driving.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the 44-year-old director of orthodontics was traveling east on Interstate 77 Sunday evening when she became involved in four-vehicle highway accident. The doctor was about 10 miles west of St. Clairsville, Ohio which is about one hour southeast of Pittsburgh when she approached a construction zone on the Interstate.
The director of orthodontics slowed down as she approached the construction zone on Interstate 77 and moments later a tractor-trailer rushed into the back of her 2003 Mini Cooper. The force of the impact obliterated the back of the small car and pushed it into the car ahead. The chain reaction of the crash also slammed into a vehicle two cars ahead of the doctor.
The back portion of the doctor's car was crushed underneath the semi and tragically the doctor was killed "on impact" according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The 53-year-old truck driver refused to speak with police but did participate in a toxicology test. The report of the accident will be complete in six to eight weeks and prosecutors will then determine whether to charge the driver. The truck driver may face a charge of vehicular homicide which is a misdemeanor in Ohio according to the state highway patrol.
