Did ESPN Get Their Preseason NFL Power Rankings Right

Just recently, ESPN has released their preseason NFL power rankings on all 32 teams as seen in the link below.

Preseason power rankings are based off last year’s results and the performance of the 32 front offices in the offseason. Uncertainty in the quarterback position will hurt a team rankings.

The Cincinnati Bengals have been ranked dead last in the rankings because they lost their star receivers and franchise quarterback refuses to return to them. That and the uncertainty that lies in the rookie pass combo of Andy Dalton and A.J. Green. They are a bit underrated and may actually surprise some critics. They still have their running game and with no diva receiver, head coach Marvin Lewis can go back to the run first physical mentality that got them on top in AFC North two years ago.

The Carolina Panthers have loaded up on tight ends with the acquisitions of Greg Olson and Jeremy Shockey as well as bringing back their top wide receiver and keeping their running game intact. That being said, the rankings do not like uncertainty in the quarterback position and with Cam Newton likely starting week one as the quarterback, the team will go as he goes.

Unlike years past, the Washington Redskins have done nothing to improve their status. Their quarterback is Rex Grossman with John Beck backing up. This may not go as well as the more optimistic fans may have hoped. 29 may be right but they may actually be worst. Rex declared that the Redskins would take the NFC East, but his career quarterback play doens’t look too encouraging.

The Denver Broncos may not be as bad as people think. Kyle Orton is a good quarterback and if Brandon Loyd can put together another good season like last year, they can move the ball. They have improved greatly in coaches but that may not be enough. Kyle Orton will have to start piling up wins fast or else the Denver brass will have no choice to call in Tim Tebow. Meanwhile, Brady Quinn continues to be chopped liver.

The San Francisco 49ers are perfectly set up for success in the NFC West. They have two great receivers in Michael Crabtree and Braylon Edwards, a top tight end in Vernon Davis and an elite running back in Frank Gore. To top it all off, they have an offensive head coach in Jim Harbaugh. All that stands in their way and is also the reason of their 26 power ranking is the fact that Alex Smith is still the quarterback. There will be no excuses this time around.
