"I was a little disrespectful" prior to taking part in the program, Myles said. "And it helped me to calm down. I used to get angry if a person would yell at me. Now, I can control myself."
The First Tee is a national program that serves youth, fostering critical life skills that provide the foundation for nine core values: honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, courtesy, sportsmanship, confidence, jugment and perseverance. The program also stresses wellness with healthy habits for physical, emotional and social well-being.
The program has introduced golf to more than 4.7 million participants while bulding character, instilling values and promoting healthy choices. It is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation and its founding partners: the LPGA, the Masters Tournament, PGA of America, PGA Tour and the USGA.
One of its biggest promoters in St. Louis is pro golfer Jay Delsing, a member of Ascension Parish in Chesterfield, who noted that its emphasis on values matches his Catholic upbringing.
At the Highlands at Forest Park Aug. 1, Metro High School sophomore Torey Dunlap paid close attention to the coach, picking up pointers on her golf game. Torey noted that the participants learn to respect themselves, others and their surroundings. She appreciated learning about manners. "When you meet people, you shake their hand, say 'hi' and look them in the eye," she noted.
Michele Miller, executive director of First Tee of Greater St. Louis, noted that the national program began in 1997. Eight years later a group started working on a chapter in St. Louis, and operations began in 2006. It serves youth ages 7-17. Though open to all children, the local chapter has a focus on serving inner-city youth.
"They don't need golf experience or golf clubs," Miller said. "We provide everything. Each time they come they receive a golf skill, a life skill and time to practice. Everything happens outside on the golf course. The life skills are seamlessly integrated."
Skills such as proper introductions are useful throughout life, she noted. "We teach kids to be patient, be positive and ask for help. That of course can be used on the golf course but also in everyday life. We help them be the best golfer they can be, but more importantly be the best person they can be.
