Mystery solved: Woman in famous Elvis pic identified

The famous 1956 Black and white photograph features King smooching with a mysterious woman and unknown. That she had remained a mystery. Until now ... Vanity Fair recently revealed his identity as Barbara Gray.

On Monday morning, Gray, now 75, and photographer Alfred Wertheimer chatted with Matt Lauer on "Today." She said the series of images were captured moments in a short time she had with Presley. It was taken in June 1956 as the singer was prepping to perform at the Mosque Theatre in Richmond, Virginia.

She said that even though the photo looked pretty sensual, she felt no chemistry with the up-and-coming star. "Maybe he had sparks, but I didn't even know who he was," Gray said. "He's a very funny kid, he was very silly and we were running around chasing each other, just being young. He narrowed me down in the hallway there to ask me if I wanted to go to (popular variety show) 'The Steve Allen Show' with him. And I said, 'No, I'm on my way to Philadelphia to see my boyfriend.' And that's when the challenge began for him."

On the day of the famous shoot, shutterbug Wertheimer never wrote down Gray's name. "I never realized that these [photos] would become iconic," Wrtheimer said. "... Nineteen years went by (between the photos being taken and Elvis' death) where nobody called me for an Elvis Presley photograph. The day he died, Time magazine called me up and said 'Bring your pictures over immediately.'"

Gray also said that her brief encounter with the rock 'n' roll legend was the first and final. "I got a Christmas card from him once, but that was it," she said. "Shortly after that, I left the state so I don't know if he tried to reach me or not.
