Sound Check: Scorsese documentary to focus on George Harrison

Except for a couple of songs—“Lay Lady Lay,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”—I was never much of a Bob Dylan fan before I watched Martin Scorsese’s excellent 2005 documentary, “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan,” and was immediately enlightened.

Scorsese’s film did all I hoped it would, catching me up to the Dylan basics that I missed out on while giving me a greater understanding and appreciation of an enigmatic artist. After watching the film, I went out and bought Dylan’s three classic mid-’60s albums—“Bringing It All Back Home,” “Highway 61 Revisted” and “Blonde on Blonde”—read a couple of Dylan biographies and wondered why it had taken me so long to catch on.

Good documentary films should have that effect on people. And if it’s a Scorsese doc, well, the man’s body of work in that genre speaks for itself. “The Last Waltz,” which documents with Scorsese-like detail the final concert of The Band, is among the best music doc ever made, if not the best. Scorcese’s 2008 Rolling Stones documentary, “Shine a Light,” was entertaining, if not as educational as the Dylan film.

And don’t forget, as a young filmmaker Scorsese helped edit the mammoth Woodstock documentary. What a learning experience that must have been.

Suffice it to say that when I heard Scorsese had been commissioned to direct a documentary about the life of George Harrison, I was excited, but for a different reason. Whereas I eagerly anticipated “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan” so I could learn more about the Bard, I can’t wait for “George Harrison: Living in the Material World,” because I grew up with the Beatles.

I know plenty about George, but it’ll be interesting to see what Scorsese has uncovered. He was granted interviews with many of Harrison’s closest friends and associates, including Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, Eric Clapton, George Martin, Phil Spector, Terry Gilliam and Eric Idle.

“Much of the material in the film has never been seen or heard before,” said a press release announcing that HBO has acquired exclusive North American broadcast rights and plans to present the film in two parts on Oct. 5 and 6. “The result is a rare glimpse into the mind and soul of one of the most talented artists of his generation and a profoundly intimate and affecting work of cinema.

Interesting factoid: Dylan had four top 10 singles, two of which peaked at #2, and two of which peaked at #7. Significance? None that I know of, just a peculiar circumstance. :-) By the way, the two #2 hits were this one and his biggest and best, "Like A Rolling Stone." The two #7 hits were "Positively 4th Street" and "Lay Lady Lay.
